The Iona College Campus Quad

Theresa A. Gottlieb, Esq., ’78

Theresa (Terry) Gottlieb graduated Iona College in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in History, yet never really left Iona. Over the years as an alum she has remained very active and served as a member of the Iona College Board of Trustees for over a decade. She was the first female to serve as President of the Alumni Association.

After graduating from Iona, Terry received her Law Degree from Temple University and has been a valued member of the Bronx District Attorney’s Office since 1981. She currently serves as the Executive Trial Division Chief where she is responsible for overseeing the Homicide Bureau, Hate Crimes and Elder Abuse Units, six Violent Crime Trial Bureaus and the Vehicular Crimes Bureau. These bureaus maintain a staff of over 300 lawyers and handle thousands of cases each year.

Prior to becoming Division Chief, Terry was Senior Trial Attorney. In this role, she
prosecuted the most serious, high-profile cases and achieved an 90% conviction rate.
Terry has tried over 100 cases to verdict with some of these cases being even more complicated due to extensive media attention.

Prior to being named as Senior Trial Attorney Terry served as Trial Bureau Chief. She also served as Deputy Chief of Narcotics Bureau and Supervisor in the Violent Crime and Gun Units and served as a line assistant in the Major Offense Bureau and Sex Crimes Unit.

Terry is the recipient of the prestigious Thomas E. Dewey Medal, for outstanding service and achievement as a New York City Prosecutor, presented by the New York Association of the Bar; as well as the recipient of New York City PBA Award for Outstanding Prosecutor.

Terry lectures extensively on trial advocacy, notably at the New York City Police Academy and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force where she instructed 600 law enforcement agents. She is a member of the New York City Hate Crime Prevention Task Force.

While a student at Iona College Terry could be found just about everywhere: she was the President of the Debate Team, Vice President of the Student Government Association, worked for four years in the Financial Aid office and was a member of the Tara Knights. She was commencement speaker at graduation and the recipient of the Sullivan Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership. She was recognized with the Brother Doyle Award for outstanding service to the alumni association and the college.

In addition to her work and service to Iona, Terry keeps busy raising her two daughters Katelynn (18) and Bridget (13), is an avid skier and volunteers in her community.
