Michael J. Deegan '75


Mr. Michael J. Deegan has served the Church in Catholic education for over forty years. He has taught at every level from elementary school through college and was a Catholic school principal for twenty years. In 2004, Edward Cardinal Egan, Archbishop of New York, appointed Mr. Deegan Director of Inner City Schools to work with the 122 elementary and secondary inner-city schools of the Archdiocese with over 60,000 children with specific responsibilities in the areas of finance, institutional advancement, curriculum development and strategic planning. Deegan helped create the Cardinal’s Scholarship Program, which has 6,400 students enrolled and represents over $300 million of benefactor funding and contributed to the design the Catholic Alumni Partnership Program. As deputy superintendent, his duties included assisting in the implementation of the regionalization’s governance structure and the reinvestment strategies of Pathways to Excellence, the Catholic Schools’ strategic plan. Currently, Mr. Deegan serves as Superintendent of Schools of the Archdiocese of New York, the second largest Catholic school system in the country with 172 schools and 55,000 students.

Mr. Deegan is a graduate of Iona College with a bachelor’s degree, a master of science in education from the College of New Rochelle and completed his post graduate studies at Manhattan College and Fordham University.

Mr. Deegan has lectured across the country including Einstein Medical College, the National Catholic Education Association Convention, Fordham University and Harvard University.

Before his current position, Deegan taught at Iona Grammar School in New Rochelle, Power Memorial Academy and Sacred Heart School in Manhattan and served as principal at St. Francis Xavier School and St. Jude School both in Manhattan and headmaster of Iona Grammar School.

He is the recipient of numerous awards including the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Compassionate Educator Award, the John J. Bruno Catholic Service Award, the Edmund Rice-Christian Brothers of North America Centenary Partner Honoree and the Iona College 2020 The Brother Arthur A. Loftus Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Despite his awards and accomplishments, Mr. Deegan simply refers to himself as a Catholic school teacher, according to him, the most important ministry in the Church.

Deegan is happily married to his wife of 29 years, Angela, who is a recently retired Catholic school principal.
